Will connecting AI to my software expose my job data?

Only if it's built sloppily. A well-scoped integration exposes exactly the fields the job needs — nothing else. The exposure risk comes from lazy integrations that sync entire databases "just in case," not from connecting AI to your software.

The longer version

Most small businesses run on a handful of systems: a CRM or job management tool, accounting software, email, maybe a scheduling app. Connecting AI to those systems is where the real value lives — that's how you get quotes drafted from real job history, follow-ups that know what was actually sold, summaries that reflect reality instead of guesses.

But "connect the AI to our system" can mean two very different things. The careful version: the AI gets API access to specific records — open jobs, customer contact info — through scoped credentials, and every read is logged. The lazy version: someone exports the whole database into a chatbot, or grants a third-party tool full admin access to everything because the setup screen asked.

The difference is scoping, and it's not exotic. It's the same discipline as giving your bookkeeper access to QuickBooks but not your email. You already understand least privilege — you just haven't applied it to AI yet because the tools make it easy to skip.

One more thing worth knowing: read-only integrations carry a fraction of the risk of read-write ones. If the AI only reads your job data to draft a summary a human approves, the worst case is a bad draft. Start read-only, add write permissions later, one workflow at a time.

How BIS handles this

I scope every integration field by field, and I default to read-only until a workflow has proven itself. Your job data stays in your systems — the AI queries what it needs, when it needs it, through credentials you control and can revoke. The boundary document lists every integration, every permission, and what happens if you pull the plug. Nothing syncs "just in case."
